Dear Alice (Giering) Archibald (Tubby) is John Owen Archibald Tony is their son

I feel so ashamed I let the whole week go by without writing to you, but I wont do that again. I know how we wait on your letters, I was trying so hard to make contact with the Jewish center to see if I could find out anything for you after two day’s I remembered it was Jewish new year and they were off three days, but I have a call in this morning, so if I don’t hear anything until I mail this I'll write again.

Now I am so real happy about the way things are going with you and that they will see to tubby and am sure he will come out all right as long as he has held his own so far am sure he will be able to from now on and with their help will soon be on his way up there. When he starts getting better as I understand they have work and school inside the place that you can improve your education while your health is coming back, and that would take up his time and am sure they would tack on six to the time he is to stay, but even if they make him stay so he is real sure after he gets out. Am wondering if they looked you over yet. Am sorry you don’t have more room so you be very careful, so much depends on you keeping well. I don’t mind if you don't have much to do with your car, tell your grandchildren how you went pioneering in the west in your young day’s and the next time I want you to go to the garage room’s or up to ask Jenny if she needs anything more you will go. (Ever think of that)

We never can feel anything we never knew anything about, but I love that little kid. I cleaned your pretty little rug am going to wash the white one today then I'll send them. I sent the laundry bag to Chas but he will send it back then I'll send your undies and the little thing’s I found of Tonies, Emma is trying to plan out to send a lamp.

She nearly worked her self to death and all the hired help to get every thing done perfect. Lou laid off two days again this last week cleaned the cellar perfect even the spider webs in the ceiling so he is about dead. Guess they write you all that, she rented the rooms to who she pleased so hope that is all right, we got the $45.00 without any complaints now we wish we would of asked 50.00 ask Jenny 7 more now and 5 in the summer. The plumbing on the sink was an awful job the sink was the opposite drain board so all the pipes had to be extended.

Alice we read in the paper about the big baumer but it wasn't much, but yesterday one of Emma’s friends that was a pilot instructor was sent home dead from Denver he had a student up and he did wrong then this boy told him to bail out and he tried to exit the plane but was to low so he crashed he was from Garard.

I had a good rest at the lake lost a few pounds am trying very hard to get well and keep well I got to look after those little kids, hope you don’t have to go to work to soon, but when you do Tony will live swell in a nursery he is such a sweet thin and plays so nice and loves kids so, Lou and Emma were just seeing red last night because that kid out there was bad to him it makes you annoyance but it won’t hurt him it will be to bad if they ever have a child, my but they are old fogies, this old world is made up of give and take from Tony on up. He would be much happier fighting half the time then not to have anyone to play with if he don’t take on their ways so no one will like him, now about Peggie she knows her grandmother when she comes over here she just goes wild to see me, or if I go out so I make a big fuss over her. They like her a lot watch her health think she has to go more often. Get up in the night to let her out, wait on her and o on. I thin she will be all right. Now about the gas coupons did you use mine they are worth 3 gallons but the car only two. I think I'll get some from Michigan but right now I am very poor.Want to go to the lake once more, Nina want to go with me to close up so in two weeks I want to go, so if you think you could send me just a few or the ones I gave you if they are not used. Now I am sending you a check for $100.00 maybe I can add some more say 25 extra next mo. I know it will take a lot for your food and don’t hesitate to go to the ration board for extra for tubby if you need to. Nina was up to Emits and they said they had the grandest letter from you they ever read and was showing it to everyone.

Wiltse gave me a portal card for Tubby to write to the man that talked to him from Arizona so he could write to him but now you are Colorado people, you don’t need it but I'll send it on to Tony, the man sent it to him.

Chas is having it pretty tough being sick and taking care of boys that are so sick but guess he will do all O.K. He thinks for sure he will come to Cleveland but it won’t be until about Thanksgiving, now will close lots of prayers and love and best wishes. Courage will get you through remember that.

Love Mother (Charlotte (Lottie) (Meredith) Giering

P.S. You may have to get Jane to help you get this first check cashed am glad you have her. So happy about Tonies letter.

Alice Dear.

I received your letter in the afternoon mail Tuesday so it was 4 days only it isn't so good over Saturday afternoon and Sunday. It might come sooner in the week. Now about the Jewish Center I talked to the case worker he read me the letter they got just yesterday, they said you were there they gave him an examination and they would give him a bed as soon as they had one, he said I guess his name is Ewing, he was sure he would have a room by now. Which I hope he has, he ask about living quarters I told him, I also told him what they said about the car. He said what di they tell you that for, I said maybe they considered it a luxury. Well he didn’t sound so pleased. So you just go slow. Now before I forget it the nurse that took care of you with Tony from Poland what was her name Conklin? Her husband is studying for the ministry in Denver and she lives there. If you can think of her name look her up, she will be poor and maybe you could help each other. Think she has a baby a few mo. Younger then Tony. I’ll try to get the trunk sent soon am a little anxious for you to have more room before you take on to much, I want to get every thing under control before we are cut of from gas all together. Guess I told you B & C are only 2 gallons but the a are still 3. Roy took a man and went out did all the towing up and down, wouldn’t take a cent I paid the man. He said I had been very good to him always and Ann said they would like to help you if they could. Everyone is wondering about the draft.

I’ll try to see if I can’t find something for my baby soon so he wont forget me, Now listen don’t you try to put him up to fight or be a bad boy, you will wish you hadn't just let him alone he don’t mind if he is put on a little, about the time you make him real dispiseable you will move some place where there is a nice boy then he will be left out because he is bad. Lou put him up to hurt David I was there you smacked him good, he just didn’t know where to do it, as long as this kid doesn’t really hurt his body let them alone, you can get on with the lady better to don’t worry he will figure it all out a little later you won’t have to help.

Lou may have to come away out there to keep you and Tony to be dirty, but I don’t believe it. He is an angel let him stay that way. Well the eating business looks pretty slim around here, can’t by a can of kraut or pumpkin nothing. I made a bout 25 gallons of kraut today Al did all the work. Want to make that much more later must have something, that's one disadvantage when you live so far away.

Well am very happy it is a good for you as it is and am sure very thing is going to be all right, think these Jews here will bring pressure on them if they don’t hurry up and take Tubby in because they sent support to them from here. Now I don’t know anything more to tell and must write Chuck yet so will close but will try to write more often. Best wishes to Tubby tell him cheer up, If he stays in the west I'll come trudging along out when I get my job done here.

Love to 3 little kids

Mother (Charlotte (Lottie) Giering

Gierthe called today was sorry she didn’t get to say bye, but will write you. I paid Tonys Insurance

Alice

Well the board met and every thing is quiet on the Potomac so as long as those little kids are lonely out there guess better send a little note, Tomorrow morning got to go down town and get my money can’t stay home with a pay day, then in the afternoon going to get my corsets that's bad on my pocket book. Any how I'll have a full day so won’t do any writing, got your letter today so the board had to wait dinner until I read it but I gave them chicken and pineapple cream pie with mer rang 3 inches high so everything was OK and I am to have some new curtains so I am going to get criss cross like you had in your bedroom. I thought they were so pretty. Yes the lady who lives in your bedroom is very modern comes from Pittsburgh she thinks your one sided bed room is very swell, they are almost perfect but because they had a new years party E. Is never going to shut up. She sweeps the carpet every day, minds her own business always. Jennies baby is cute looks so little to old Tony. I told Mrs. Gilmore about the hankies, remember how you liked hankies when you was a kid if you had 20 and got one more you was so happy. Yes I sent Lou a nice Christmas present a hankie with a row of home made lace on it and a card wasn't that nice?

I didn't give Chas anything but I told him I liked him that was something. Now I have a $9 telephone bill if Lou hears that he has always said he was so glad Chas wasn't My calf. Him and Lois called me from California and he had about 8 Cleveland calls one was for 15 he just visits.

Your call was less then $3.00 don’t just know how much you could write me when to be home than call me but I think the time is 2 or 3 hours different we changed our time here we don’t have that daylight saving time but most every one else does, like New Castle and half of Ohio.

I don’t know about Alice and Sam, paper said he was 44, he had the big head so when he got that job because he hadn't ever had anything before. Mrs. Isaly didn't like him but she does now and I think they went to Petersburg Fla. To her cottage am not sure but she is there his wife was Southern a Dyn Dora everyone hated, she just went away and sued for divorce and he didn’t know she had even left him, and he liked her little girl a lot, and he has a nice home in Newport, and I think she will make him buy my ???? And property. Chas tells that as the worst yet on me, marrying of one of my friends to a guy to get to Make a deal, Tubby can get a smile out of this. I am to help her make society in return, so I'll let you know how it works out. Don’t know if I ever told you but Isalys only offered me $10.000 for the property and I have 27. In it so that wasn't so good but they always buy from folks that have to sell. Now I guess my day is over will write again soon bye.

The sum is so right and it is very cold this morning hardly ever see the sun here. It shines more in Poland. Lou is going to work but still coughs his head off. Al went out and emptied the ashes and garbage. Marg. told the garbage man we had 3 familles and he wanted 3.25 per mo. So we quit him. Roy is home on fur low he don’t know where he will go when he gets back. Lots of Love Mother.

Lottie Giering

Alice

Just a line today s am thinking about you all the time hope everything is all right and you are all keeping your spirits up. I know at this time of the year we are all lonesome because we cannot be together but in another 10 days it will all be over then the 1st of the year will be here, the days will lengthen and spring will be on it’s way.

Remember how you hated school and was just coming home we all talked you into staying the days traveled and the seasons came and went and your four years were up as you look back on that it wasn't so long or so bad, now if you both can be patient, look for all the nice things you can, count your blessings everyday.

You have your little guiding star there to watch to take the monotney away. I told you before to go to the library for books you could study your English a little or get light fiction its easier on you when you feel lonely get Tubby a few true detectives I’ll send him some when I have anything more to send. So you can get your days in, you don’t need to tell me how you both feel I know that's why if I can give you a trend of thought to keep you up. Haven't had a letter for a long time but guess one will come today yet. I had the stove put in the fireplace in your bedroom but I took the one Jennie had and it just fit then I gave her the bigger one. Then I bought one off Maud that is the size of the entire port in their living room has a brass rim just like is in there but have to buy some of the cones in it they are 10 inches high so have to send away for them but feel sure it will pay, was going to put the little white stove in Jennies bedroom and we can’t find it, this coal is lots better but it has been zero for 3 or 4 days.

I feel so sorry I couldn't send more for your Christmas but some day I'll make it up to you all. Girtie expects her baby in June but will go home if Harold goes to war. Virginia Steve's wife you know will have a baby in June to and he has had his first exam. She will come in from the country if he goes. Lou don’t know yet. My old Sara from the south wrote me today wants to come back to Youngstown so may take her but not to help Nettie, Nettie always thinks of you when she bakes a pie. Fitz is better he said tell you and Tubby you were always on his heart but he couldn't write. I fixed all the glass ware Tony broke the pitcher looks OK but it has 2 little holes, don’t show it will do for an ornament or flowers. The candlestick and dish look fine, Must start a rug again soon haven't done anything with the coat yet but will. Several folks have called for your address hope you get a lot of mail, your letter from Miss Higgens was swell. Now guess I’ll close didn’t have anything to write about only had you on my heart. Lots of love to my three old soldiers.

Mother (Lottie Giering)
