Rand Williams has dedicated and provided a great amount of resources for the
Giering family tree. This is a letter he wrote to me describing the family. For
more information please visit Dick Gierings site at http://www.giering-family-trees.org/
Okay, here goes Christina Giering (Young Christina, also known as Tina,)
became the wife of Norman Lennig. Fredericka, also known as Ricky) Married
Strobel. Mary, whose name was actually Marie, died before the turn of the
century. I do not have her DOB , but her DOD was 26 November 1895. She married a
man named Geiger. Old Christina's name was "Benzing", regardless of
how you see it spelled. I got that right from the "Heimatbuch" of
Dornstetten, Germany
I do not know how much of the family history You know. I will try to fill You in
.
It started out in a town named "Aistaig", which is a suburb of
Oberndorf am Neckar, or, Oberndorf on the Neckar River, in Southwest Germany.
Andreas Giering, (The name was Guhring then ) was born in 1681. He went to
Dornstetten, and had a son Johann Friedrich, (1719-1793) . He had 5 sons. Adam
Friedrich,(1750-1825), Johannes,1765-1835) Andreas,1766-1838) Johann Jakob,
(1774-1844), Johann Adam (1778-1839) Our line descended from Johann Jakob. He
had three sons. Christopher Friedrich (1803-1848), Gottlieb, (1809-1880) , and
Ludwig (1818-DOD uncertain). We will refer to him as Ludwig 1, for he had a son
Ludwig who we will refer to as Ludwig 2
Ludwig 1 married a woman named Mary Glouser, (Sometimes seen as Glosser) in
Dornstetten Germany. They had four children, three sons and one daughter. The
sons were Ludwig 2, Christian, and Jakob. The girl was Katherine. Mary Glouser
died. After several years, Ludwig 1 married again. This wife was Katherina
Benzing. The sons were very bitter at their father marrying again, and they left
for the USA in 1866 and 1867. If you read the arrivals of the ship they came on,
you will see a "Rosine Katherine" listed also. Do not let this throw
You. She was a cousin, not their sister.
Germany had just undergone the 30 year war.it was in a deep depression. In the
town of Dornstetten 36 houses burned down in one year. It is not know if
Ludwig1's was one of them. Germany actually paid people to leave. I have a copy
of the advertisement asking people to leave. Ludwig 2 left in 1872 with six
children. Katherine from his first marriage was one of them. In Germany, they
were mostly weisgerber's, or white tanners. They knew how to make white leather.
Ludwig 2, learned the cooper trade, or, how to make barrels. When the boys came
to this country, Ludwig 2, now known as "Louis" went to work for a
brewery in New Castle Pa. He later came to Youngstown Ohio, where he worked for
the Smith Brewing Co. Which later became the Renner Brewing Company. He later
started his own bottling works, brewery, and winery. He took his brother
Christian ( Now known as "Charlie") Into the business with him. Ludwig
2 came to this country, and also changed his name to "Louis". (Katherina
became "Christina") However, his boys would have nothing to do with
him. He was a Butcher on the East Side of Youngstown Ohio. Even though Louis and
his brother and sons did very well for themselves, Ludwig 1 died a relative
pauper. This is why the sons from the first wife were always referred to as
"The Other Side Of The Family!" The arm of the family that You are
associated with is descended from Louis 2, Or the Other side of the family. I am
descended from John, the last Giering born in Germany. After they came to this
country, they had three more children. Ludwig was quite a bit older than
Christine. In fact 27 years older. There is a difference of 39 years between the
oldest (Ludwig 2) and the youngest, (Frederick)
