She married JAMES BELL. He was born 1814, and died July 25, 1873.
Notes for JAMES BELL:
The Bells come from the vicinity of Banbride, county Down, in Northern Ireland.
This is also true of the Johnstons, McCaws, and other families that frequently
intermarried. Our genealogy begins with James Bell, We know the names of his
brothersand sisters but, at this time, cannot carry the family back to earlier
generations. James and his brother both came to America. Joseph settled in
Brooklyn, New York and his descendents, the Gowdeys, still live, for the most
part, in the New York area.
James Bell was a farmer and an amatuer veteranarian. He must have made a very
strong impression on his community, as when he decided to emigrate, his
neighbors presented him with citation wishing him well. Previously, they had
honored him with another on the occasion of an epidemic among cattle in the area
that he had helped aleviate. The citation given when the family moved describes
him eloquently.
Address and presentation to James Bell ESQ. Edenvale, Edentoory, Co. Down.
Dear Sir,
As you and your family are about to emigrate to the United States, to join
Relatives and Friends: we, a deputation from the Gentry and Farmers of the
surrounding Parishes wait on you to say how deeply we will feel the loss and
also to express the high esteem and respect in which you are so very justly held
by all who know you. We wish to acknowledge our gratitude for the very valuable
services you rendered to all who applied to you in giving advice and skillfully
tending their Cattle and Horses when ill for many years. Th0ose services you
performed gratuitously and often at great personal inconvenience and loss, but
always willingly, and in that obliging kindly manner inherited in your family.
We wish that you and your worthy wife may, in prosperity and happiness, long be
spared over your promising children: and lastly, we beg of you to accept this
purse of soverigns not as a reward for your services but as a token of sincere
regard and respect for your very great worth.
5/2/1873 from Maurice Lindsay, Chairman/Joseph Dickson/ John Moore,
Secretaries/Alexander Rea, Treasurer.

50. GRETCHEN HITTNER8 BROWN (CATHERINE ARMSTRONG7 HITTNER, CATHERINE
JOHNSTON6 ARMSTRONG, AMY JOHNSTON5 BELL, ANN JANE4 JOHNSTON, MAURICE3, JOSEPH2,
?1) was born March 15, 1943 in PA. She married CHARLES THOMAS ARCHIBALD , son of
JOHN ARCHIBALD and ALICE GIERING.
Notes for CHARLES THOMAS ARCHIBALD:
ARCHIBALD. A surname derived from the personal name Archibald. in OE Arcebald,
Arcenbald, or Ercenbald and doubtfully explained as meaning 'right bold' or
'holy prince'. Archebaldus filius Swani de Forgrunde is mentioned in reign of
William the Lion. Erchnbaldus, Abbot of dunfermelyne mentioned c. 1180, appears
again in the same record as Arkebaldus and Arkenbaldus. Thomas, the brother of
Erkenbaldus, witnessed the gift of the church of Kilmaurs to the Abbey of Kelso
before 1189, and Arkembaldus de Duffus was witness to an agreement between the
bishop of Moray and John buseth concerning the churches of Coneway and
Dulbatelauch between 1203 - 34. Robert Archebalde had a charter of the Hospital
of Roxburgh in 1390 from Robert III and John Archibald was a witness in St.
Andrews in 1545. The "of" (de) form of the personal name is found in
Archambaud (earl of Dougles), 1405. Harrison's explanation of the use of
Archibald for Gaelic Gillespie is probably correct. "Archibald was adopted
by the Scots as a Lowland equivalent of Gillespie because the -bald was
mistakenly supposed to mean 'hairless', 'shaven', 'servant' and therefore to be
equivalet to Gael. gille 'servant', 'shaven one', 'monk'. Harchbald (earl of
Argyll) 1493, Archombaldus 1233, Arkanbaldus 1228, Enkerbaldus a. 1189. (This
information provided by our good friend Elaine from Britain.)
