Dear Harvey,

Well it took 7 days for your letter to get her, but I got it and that's the main thing.

You mentioned in your letter about the combat QM but I believe these buzz bomb happy guys here. I mean the air corp. have got them beat. Boy then can blow the hot air. Last weekend I was in Oxford and happened in a pub to get a few shots of scotch and there were 3 of them to 5 of us. I mean infantry men. Well the situation got to a point where they asked us out in the street. Well we took them up and they got the worst of it. A little to many odds I guess for them. All I got out of it was that I lost my cap and messed me up a little. Boy they can make you sick from bragging. But I had a good time anyway and got another hat in a store there.

I hope you do get home to dance at Virginia's wedding then I go up and punch her square between the eyes. But I know you won't do that. She really pulled a boner on you maybe you should have married the other girl now and have 12 more pts ha, ha.

Jean and I expect to get married shortly after I get out of the army. We think we have waited long enough. It is 3 yrs now.

Say do you need any ribbons or combat infantry badge. they sell them here at school they are a little high but they are good material with celephoid over them. Let me know if you want some or maybe you would rather till you get back to the states now.

I wrote the 7.ine. I & E officer to ask about staying another term. I heard a rumor today that they were going to move the school to Mannheim so it would be closer the occupation forces and anyway the ? here want the school back now.

It sounds like you must have fallen for a girl there, but what is the story about this? I thought you just came over to kill the bastards? Ha, Ha. Well get all you can and then leave her holding the kid. Well I think I'll go to the show to night so write when you get time and let me in on everything.

Your Old Pal.

Eugene R.

Here I come again, and as yet only one letter from you since you got out of the hospital. I’ve sent 7 letters with stamped envelopes and paper in them, how come I don’t get any answers? I’m not going to this time, and see if I get any better results. I hope I do! Are you still waiting there or what? We went to Detroit last Wed. And stopped and saw Aunt Eenie and kids, Uncle Will was working. I read your letter to her, and it seemed good to see your handwriting again, later then mine was dated. Mine was the 23 and hers was the 28 of May. This is August! Do you wonder why we are all worrying again? Or should I say yet? I got a letter from Jim G. Last week too and must write to him again, I haven’t for a long time, as I didn't know if his address was the same or not.

Just finished painting 2 lawn chairs so now maybe we can sit outdoors and relax awhile. That is, after I get the awning on two. We got new awnings for them as they were shot, were so old. So now will have them just like new. It’s a nice time to start fixing them, I know but I’ve been so blamed busy for so long have just put it off. I’ve canned 18 Qt.. Cherries, unsweetened, 10 of red raspberries and made currant jelly and red rasp. Jam. With part white syrup. It’s funny but I can’t even get any canning sugar, no one can rather we have the corysons 5# apiece, but no sugar in the stores. They promise more now though so maybe I’ll be able to get it in time for peaches anyway.

Wendy had his vacation the last 2 weeks but we didn’t do much as we have to much work here, garden etc. Besides the 100 chicks and 20 hens, we did get to go to a lake once in awhile. Lil, Dad had a cottage at Sand Lake so the girls and I went for 3 days. Sure had fun, swimming and fishing they and Herb take care of our chicks so had to stay home then but went to Detroit last Friday and saw Detroit and Chicago play. Only 1 run in the whole game and that was a home run in the last inning for Detroit! He said it was sure a swell game. Well Bo I honestly love don’t know what else to tell you, except we’re all feeling swell, and outside of the regular work we keep kinda busy, but rest too. Hope we hear from you real soon now, so don’t disappoint us will you? Bye Bye for awhile, Sending Loads and Loads of Love from All of us,

Toots, Wendy and girls. (Toots is Harvey's sister)

9/16/1945 Letter 52, Letters from you 16

Dear Son Harvey - Received your most welcome letter the other day dated Sept. 2- Sorry that you are not among those that are coming home you sure are getting the big rod up the shoot all right as if there is anyone that needs a break it is you and I sure hope you get one and soon to, before winter set’s in as the broadcasts from Germany says it sure will be hell there and I wonder if all they say is true. You ought to know if it is or not. Are you guys still living in tents and the German people living in nice houses and also that the girls are pretty darn nice and like to be with the American G.I. And a lot of other things to. You could write quite a letter you know on that subject if you wanted to there don't seem to be much to write about here as you know about what’s going on here when I say that everything is about as it has been and pretty near normal as about all the point systems and rationing is over there is only very few items left on the ration list and they are slated to go soon of course. We are having plenty of after war labor trouble, strikes and shut down and plenty out of work but that can be expected now although we have plenty of work at our shop in fact there is not any tool and die makers idle they are in demand all over but if they don't kick up the wages pretty soon there will be strikes with us to as things are pretty high and sure will be higher if they take the control off then look out. Harl is back sweeping the floor again and Art back at Rouch about also the hey days are over for those big money guys and about time to as those guys were making a whole lot more with their bare hand’s then I was with hundreds of dollars worth of tool’s so maybe it is our turn now. I have been working every day and feeling pretty good I got plenty of stuff to eat and drink and my good Pal Ella to take care of my other troubles so I am O.K. But not to happy as there always seems to be some things I want and can’t get but I guess that all goes with old age so the main thing is to keep well. Just got through eating dinner just don't eat enough to keep a fella alive but don't seem to hurt me any as I keep my 165 lb.. An it has been that way for a long time. I know one thing these darn teeth you know I just got took for another hundred bucks for the ones I got that makes the third set that I have had so far and cant eat now although there is times when I can bite pretty good that is if I would bite on your finger it would hurt a little bit and maybe make a small dent but it would hurt me more then it would you and right now if I had to bite a chunk out of an apple I just could not do it not even a soft one so that's the kind I go now I even smoke mostly cigarettes as I cant hold my pipe so that’s that. Well son your greenbacks are still salted away and you got quiet a pile of them now in fact there is $225.27 so for keep on and there will be enough to get a pretty good car with in fact anything but a wife for Christ sake don't buy one of them for there not any of them worth much now days so leave them where you find them that the best way to get away from them. Harl was telling me they come all times of night looking for him he must have what it takes and it can’t be what the rest of the Lamarands has got either unless he is the buck of the gang so whatever it is that's the way it is. I have not heard or seen the kids for weeks that is the Michiganders, the last time was at Lil’s at the corn and wiener roast. We had a good time and everyone was well and wishing you were there to as SY Will said you were on your way home and we were all looking for you so Sonny when that happens be sure and let the one know first the one that really does care that’s me so until next time love and good luck as ever your Dad.

At Camp July 4, 1941

Hi Soldier: Uncle Sam finally got me into his armed forces. I am stationed at the Quarter Master training and replacement center Fort Francis and Warren Cheyenne Wyoming. I go to mechanics school half a day and drill the other half. Cheyenne is two miles from camp. We can ride a bus to Cheyenne for ten cents. So far it hasn’t done me any good. We can’t leave camp unless properly dressed in full uniform. I have been in the army for three weeks Friday and didn’t get my complete outfit yet. Wyoming is supposed to be a cowboys country. I haven’t seen anything that even looks like a cowboy unless some of these bowlegged soldiers are ex cowboys. Think so? I signed for my first check today. We get paid July 10, for the month of June. Boy I could go for good bottle of beer or a shot of calverts after drinking some of the slop they sell down here that is supposed to represent beer. How about you? They are going to have a rodeo down here the latter part of July. Soldiers can get in for twenty five cents on certain days. I think I’ll go and see if a cowboy actually exists in this deserted state. The temperature scoots down to the forties in the evening down here. I guess this year will be the year in many a year that I will be unable to go swimming.

Your Unlucky Friend,

Mike

P.S. Eleven more months and ten more days I be out of the callaboose. Think so? Because I haven't got a complete uniform I’ll have to stay around this dump the fourth of July.

October 3, 1945

Shrivenhan, England

Hello Lam, Well it took me just one week from the time I left there. This is really a place here. It used to be a officers Candidate school for the British during the war so most of the buildings are really new. This is the second term here. It isn’t very far to London from here by train. We get passes every week end and we can go anyplace we want to go. School doesn’t start till next Monday so I’m going to London this week end and see a bit of jolly old England.

How’s things coming with you? Did you get my box on the way? The money situation is a bit of a problem now but I soon master it.

It sure was a change when we got to England. It took us 8 hrs to come from Camp Poll Mall to South Hampton. Everybody here treats you like you were something. The train’s at least have windows. We had very nice cars coming from South Hampton to Shrivenham. The Red Cross was around to. One thing I noticed lst night is I was entering a small pub or beer hall in a near bye town that they do have some good looking gals here but half of them are either blondes or red heads.

Have you heard when you might be going home? I hope the sooner the better for you. I wonder if you would do me a couple of favors. I would like a couple 36 patches and would you please give the note inclosed to the 1 ST Sergeant for me. It is when I come back to France. I can get the 850F that you get extra. I could have gotten it when I came over but they didn’t supply with the necessary paper so maybe I'll get it when I go back.

Well say hello to all the boys and tell Art Alias that the cubs were just lucky this year. I’ve got to go now so write when you can and don’t forget.

Your Good Pal,

Eugene R.
