By Jack Edwards Peters II
Descendants of Daniel McCready
Generation No. 1
1. DANIEL1 MCCREADY1 was born Bef. 1694 in Scotland2, and died Bef. 1794 in Scotland2. He married MRS. (SPOUSE OF DANIEL)3. She was born in Scotland4, and died in Scotland4.
Notes for DANIEL MCCREADY:
The name McCready may be a corrupted form of the name MacCrea of the MacCrae Clan. It
also may have been derived of the name Redmond which was in itself corrupted from Red Mount
or Ready-Mount which were the colors of the ponies and uniforms of their riders and speed and
efficiencies of the soldiers respectively. The 'Readys' or 'Ready-Mounts' were like "minutemen" of
American Revolution times. The Clan MacCrae were, from the fourteenth century, followers of
MacKenzie of Kintail in Wester Ross. They were hereditary bodyguards to the chief of Clan
MacKenzie and were known as: 'MacKenzie's Shirt of Mail'. The clan name has been spelled:
Macra, Macrach, Macrae, Macraith, Maccraw and so on.
In Ulster, as in Scotland, the name has often been shortened to Rea.
Apart from some of the name in Dublin, MacCready is found exclusively in Ulster where it
originates. It is most common in counties Down, Derry, and Antrim. The name is in Irish: Mac
Riada and should be properly: MacReedy, but the 'c' sound was carried over from the Mac-
prefix.
Mac Riada was the name of a Donegal family who were erenaghs of the church lands of
Tulloughobegley in the barony of Kilmacrenan. They were a distinguished sept, who were
hereditary scribes and poets to the Kings of Orgiall and were displaced by the intrusion of Scottish
families in what was known as the "Plantation of Ulster." Of this sept was Donagh MacReidy or
MacCready of Coleraine, Dean of Derry, who was martyred for his faith in 1608 by being pulled
apart by four horses. The Derry name Mac Conriada, more usually anglicised as Mac Conready
and MacAready, has also been made MacCready. They moved to the northeast into Scotland and
settled at Pierceton in Ayrshire where they also acquired territories in Stranrawer.
Some of the name in Ulster, Ireland will be of Scottish origin, for the form MacRedie is found
in Ayrshire,Scotland on an 1120 A.D. census roll to determine the rate of taxation. The forms
MacReadie and MacCreadie, are found in Galloway. But in Scotland it is of Irish origin, the first
of the name being Andrew Macredie, Provost of Stranrawer (now Stranraer), an Irishman.
Many families migrated back to the ancestral home of Northern Ireland to flee religious
persecution. A lot of them were banished from Scotland, to the Colonies, Australia, or to the
Carolina's. During the U.S. war for independence, McCreadie allegiances were divided. Some
remained American, while others became United Empire Loyalists and moved to Canada.

3. HUGH2 MCCREADY (DANIEL1)11 was born Abt. 1730 in Galloway, Scotland12, and died Bef. 183012. He married MARY DICKSON*13 Abt. 174914.
Notes for HUGH MCCREADY:
THE McCREADY NAME
The Gordons in Scotland began with Adam of Gordon, of Anglo-Norman descent, who settled
in the village of Gordon in Berwickshire during the reign of David I (1124-53). From the younger
son of Sir Adam de Gordon, who died in 1333, came the Lords of Lochinvar, and it was in 1455
that Gordon of Lochinvar finally conquered Galloway. Until that time the language of "Gaels" is
said to have remained unchanged.
"Gordon of Lochinvar got his estate of Lochinvar for helping to exterminate the native Picts or
Wild Scots of Galloway, whose land was forfeited to the invaders. Red Mount was evidently one
of his warriors. (See: notes for Margaret Redmond). There was light-mounted cavalry employed
in this invasion, so you can see these Gordons were not native Gallowagians. The tartan used by
these troopers would be 'Stewart of Galloway' as the Stewarts were Earls (overlords) of
Galloway, succeeding the original princes of Galloway of the MacFergus line.
Fearghus, Prince of Galloway, married a daughter of Henry of England, thereby founding the
House of Creagdarach (Rock of the Oak). Annie Laurie of Maxwelton fame was the wife of
Creagdarach of that day. Annie, Lady Creagdarach, built the present house; the original was on
top of the Rock... The tartan was an ancient one of Galloway and a man arrayed in this tartan on a
reddish pony certainly would be a red mount." [from a letter to T.L.McCready, New York City,
N.Y., January 23, 1936].
McCready is a Galloway name and means in English: "Son of Redmond," a corruption of Red
Mount, much as Red Gauntlet was so named in Sir Walter Scott's tales. The Gaelic-speaking
natives of Galloway corrupted and shortened this into Rididh, pronounced "Ready" ("dh" is "y"),
with the "Mac" (son of...), it becomes MacRididh...pronounced MacReady or McCready. Red
Mount comes from the reddish Galloway pony and the uniform with much red in it, hence the
nickname.
It might therefore seem from this that the name McCready came into being during the fifteenth
century, though whether from Gordon or other stock can never be known. However, if it is a
corruption of "Red Mount," others to whom it has been applied must have assumed the English
version, for the name Redmond is still very much in use. Perhaps they were the ones who
returned to other parts of Scotland. It is here that the MacCrae clan may have become known as
well.
The following are variants of the name MacRedie, found in Galloway in 1684. They are from
the book: "Surnames of Scotland" [by George F. Black, New York, N.Y., 1946, ppgs. 480 &
561.]
MacCreadie, MacCreaddie, MacCredie, MacRedie, McCreedie, McKredy, McRadie,
McReadie, McReady, McReddie, McRedie, and shortened to Credie, Macredie (Ayrshire),
Macreadie (Galloway), Macready, Macredie; the Macredies of Pierceton, Ayrshire, are originally
from Ireland (in 1720).
Galloway, famous for its scenic beauty, is in the extreme southwest corner of Scotland.
Originally a province, embracing a much larger area, it now consists of only the counties of
Kirkoudbright and Wigtown - Stranraer in the latter.
It was near the town of Wigtown, in the bay of the same name, that 18 year old Margaret
Wilson was tied to a stake and drowned on May 11, 1685, because she refused to renounce her
faith during the "Killing Time" of religious persecutions. The bay is also known as Solway Inlet.
In 1930, descendants of Robert McCready of Washington County, PA. made some effort to
learn of his background. He had been born in Port William, Scotland and Rev. John Hill of Port
William wrote that the name McCredie was not uncommon in his district. Rev. Gavin Lawson of
the town of Wigtown reported that there were several tombstones in the old churchyard with the
name McCready.
In November 1964, Rev. C. Raymond Vincent, minister of the Wigtown Church wrote, in
part, as follows;
"Unfortunately, I have only been minister here for a few months, and do not know where any
such stones are to be found. I have made inquiries about them, so far without success. I also
approached the Rev. Gavin Lawson, whom you refer to in your letter..... He was unable to help
me and remarked that many old stones with which he was familiar have since fallen into decay.
The old churchyard being closed for burials, there is no gravedigger who might be able to give the
information I seek on your behalf."
The McCreadys did not move over to Ireland during Oliver Cromwell's time, as some others of
the Galloway province did for there were no McCreadys included in the 1659 census of Ulster,
though ten years later, in 1669, the name of James McCready of Carrickfergus appeared in a
Hearthmoney Roll for County Antrim.
The first of the family connected with Pierceton, Ayrshire was Andrew M'Creddy or Macredie,
Provost of Stranrawer and originally from Ireland in 1720. He purchased the estate from Sir
Robert Barclay, last of the family of Pierceton in 1720.
