The McCready Family of Dorchester County, MD

I believe that the McCready family originated in Somerset County, MD. and migrated into Dorchester County. These counties are on the Eastern shore of Maryland and the area is considered "tidewater." The Eastern Shore of Maryland lies between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Alexander McCready born in 1686, in Rehobeth, MD. (Somerset County) was a ship’s carpenter. At this time I do not know when or where the McCreadys arrived in the colony of Maryland.

Andrew McCready who died in 1798 was a mariner who boarded the British Fleet at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in 1777 and piloted the British War Ships up the Chesapeake Bay. This information was found in the Maryland State Archives, Vol. 21, p. 122. The early McCready’s baptized their children in the Anglican Church and this, I think, explains the loyalty to England during the American Revolution. All of the birth dates of the early McCready’s were found in the church records of the Great Choptank Parish which was the Church of England in the new world.

The next Andrew McCready was born about 1765 and married Sarah Hopkins on Aug. 31, 1796. Sarah was part of a very prominent family in Somerset County, MD. Andrew and Sarah had seven children.
