The following records made me question whether Enos M. Jones was actually sick when he served in the war. Roster records show him as a deserter on a number of occasions and during several periods of time when he deserted to seek medical treatment he was actually found to be elsewhere. I have put together a chart to outline his locations during his desertion. Click here to view chart

I Enos M. Jones on oath say that I was a private of Co "K" of the 118th Regimen Ohio Volunteers and was diseased in the service aforesaid having been previously in good health, that I believe no commissioned officer of my company knows all the necessary facts on which my claim for a pension depends, and that I do not know the residence of Srg. Patterson who examined me for a discharge nor do I suppose that he knows when or where I contracted my diseases. That Sgt. Woods who also examined me at the time of my discharge, had no knowledge of my disease except what he obtained on examination at that time. That I shall therefore ask you to file affidavits of commissioned officers not of my company and of other private members of my company in support of my claim.

Enos M. Jones

Sworn to and subscribed before me this 8th day of November 1865 and I certify that I have no interest in this claim.

John Kincaid Major Commanding he Reg’t,

General Affidavit.

State of Ohio County of Hancock SS.

In the matter of the claim for pension services on new disability (rheumatism) no. 111239 of Enos M. Jones of Company K 118th Regiment Ohio Volunteers. On this 19th day of July 1877 personally came before me a ? In and for said county and State, Enos M. Jones and who being duly sworn, states as follows: I am aged 49 years and a citizen of the County of Hancock and state of Ohio and that my post office address is Findlay Ohio.

I am claimant concerning the time, place, and circumstances of the origin of my rheumatism. I say it was at Falmouth KY in or about the month of December 1862 while on duty that I first in my life felt days after that I was taken with the chills which continued for about one week and was attended to by the regimental surgeon Philips who doctored me, soon after that rheumatism set in first in my back, shortly after that the heart disease set in, so that I was afflicted with both diseases after that was put on light duty. Until about the month of Aug. 1863 while on a forced march from Lebanon KY to Louden, Tenn. I broke entirely down so that I could not keep my place in the Regiment, after the seize at Knoxville, Tenn. sent to the rear, on account of rheumatism and heart disease. And placed in the hospital at Knoxville under the treatment of surgeon Buorytan & Taylor for heart disease rheumatism. In March 1864, I was sent to the Hospital at Mckuck then to Louisville KY then to ? Indiana then to the hospital at ? Ohio, then to the hospital at Cleveland Ohio, then to Cincinnati Ohio at which several hospitals I was kept at, from fall of 1863 until in March 1865 when I was sent fur- low by way of NY To the army at Salsbury North Carolina where I was discharged on account of my disability. That during all the time from the first attack of rheumatism and heart disease as aforesaid stated I have not been free from either of the said complaints, and have been always constantly under treatment for the same, that I was never afflicted with either of said complaints until after I went into the military service of the United States, and that said diseases were contracted from exposure and services on duty. That the rheumatism has drawn me out of my natural shape and on account of said diseases I am rendered wholely unable to perform any manual labor. That the reason why I did not put in rheumatism in as one of the causes in my former application for Pension was because my attorney told me it was unnecessary as my discharge only mentioned heart disease. That the reason why I omit the affidavit of Captain Samuel Howard is because I do no now know where my company officers live at this time.

W. Ribben

Enos M. Jones

Sworn to an subscribed before me, on the day and year first above written, and I do hereby certify that I read said affidavit to said affiant, and acquainted him with its contents, before he executed the same, and that I am an entirely disinterested party. Concerning the credibility of the witness I certify as follows:
