3. Jesse Watson (Thomas1)

B: 1743-1753, Pennsylvania

M: Margaret ___________

Children:

Jesse Lewis Watson

Thomas W. Watson

Notes:

Some records indicate possibility of a fourth son, Lewis, but I cannot substantiate for certain whether Lewis is son of Jesse or John Watson.

(1769-70) James, Jesse and John Watson, along with their mother, Margaret, Mather step-siblings, Lewis step-sibling, and step-father, Daniel Lewis, moved to Buffalo Valley between 1769 and 1770 to land they owned. The Buffalo Valley, or Penn's Valley, as it was sometimes referred to, was purchased by the Penn's from the Indians on November 5, 1768; and the first application for land was made on April 3, 1769.

Document.

Children:

Margaret Watson

John Watson, Jr

James Watson

David Watson

Elizabeth Watson

Lewis Watson

Elias Watson

Matilda Watson

Notes:

(1769-70) James, Jesse and John Watson, along with their mother, Margaret, Mather step-siblings, Lewis step-sibling, and step-father, Daniel Lewis, moved to Buffalo Valley between 1769 and 1770 to land they owned. The Buffalo Valley, or Penn's Valley, as it was sometimes referred to, was purchased by the Penn's from the Indians on November 5, 1768; and the first application for land was made on April 3, 1769.

(1773) The Northumberland County Deed books, deed dated April l3, 1773 reflects that Reuben Haines of Philadelphia sold to John Watson of Northumberland County two of the patent surveys which he had acquired.

(1776) John Watson appears among the inhabitants of Potter Township, who signed an application for arms and ammunition, Sept 20, 1776.

John Watson, private) among soldiers receiving pay (Northumberland County in the American

Revolution), Snyder, ed, p. 353)

(1776) John Watson and Leah witness her brother, Jacob Beale's marriage in York County Pennsylvania (Quaker Marriage Records, York Co., Pa.)

"John Watson, who resided at Huntington Twp., York Co. PA" was a Lieutenant, Col. Thompson's Battalion of Riflemen, Cap't Michael Doudel's Co., later Capt. Henry Miller's Co. Second Regiment, later First Reg't of the Army of the United Colonies. "He volunteered for action during the Siege of Boston. Arrived after the siege had ended. First action evening of July 29th, 1775 at Cambridge." (DAR application of Mildred Sheley Volkman dated 8 Dec 1988).

(1778) John's name appears on the assessment of Potter Township 1778-80, 1781, 1783-4, 1785, 1786, and 1787, his assessed valuation being 106.0.0, this amount being among the ten highest in that

township, and after the ware being further assessed with 2 horses and 3 head of cattle. This was

footnoted as references from Linn's, History of Centre and Clinton Counties, pp. 18-23 and the

Northumberland Co. Deed Book A, p. 216.)

(1793-96) Moved from Northumberland County Pennsylvania to Bedford County Virginia with brother, James.

(1802) Sarah H. Thornhill Estate Inventory dated 4 Feb 1802 in Bedford County, Virginia lists appraisers as Joseph Holt, Charles Moorman, John Watson, and Jesse Watson (pp. 343-345).

(1808) Land Indenture 30 Apr 1808 Bedford County Virginia recorded Greene County, Ohio, Josiah Grover, 20 Dec 1808.

(1809) Relocated to Greene County, Ohio. (Records of James Dwinell).

(1831) Sale of land title 14 Jun 1831 in Grantee Index, Vol 13, pp. 419-420 reflects sale of John's land sold in Greene County, Ohio after his death.

Differing records in above notes would show John to be both in Northumberland County and In York County during revolutionary times. This may be possible, because of the "great runaways" from the Northumberland Territory from 1776 to 1780 as a result of Indian attacks during that time. People returned to the eastern counties for a few years until things settled down, then returned to their lands in the west, for example the Mathers', who returned about 1780. Otherwise, we have two different persons here.

Notes:

Records of Thomas H. Watson, Evanston, Illinois prepared in the late 1920's or early 1930's of his great-grandfather Thomas W. Watson reflect that Rebecca Moorman was daughter of Rebecca Leftwich and Charles Moorman (Paschall Genealogical Committee Records, Newberry Library, Chicago, Il.), not his second wife, Nancy Hancock. By Rebecca Leftwich, Charles Moorman had Rebecca and Rev James Leftwich. Rebecca died, perhaps in childbirth to James or shortly thereafter that year.
